Vista December CTP

So.. I'm blogging from Windows Vista 5270 at the moment.. And I must say, "wow". I've tried the first official BETA, and it was kind of, well, not really anything new. Furthermore it had a stupid bug in it which made my icons shrink to 2x2 pixels. But this second BETA is so, so, so much better.

I see they changed all kinds of stuff, and fixed lots of bugs. I love the new "start button" (which no longer says "start", actually). I also like the updated glass effects (especially of the taskbar). Things I don't like about the new start menu is that they removed the icons from the rigth hand side. For me searching something in the start menu is often about matching the right icon.. I can't be bothered to read the text. Now I have to read the text. Bah. Also, why remove the bloody "Run..." item from the start menu? I used that a lot! After a lot of searching, I finally found it hidden somewhere in the options of the start menu and enabled it again. I can't believe that was disabled by default.. Lots of documents rely on it! ("Go to Start --> Run --> ...").

Something else I'm amazed at is the speed. Of course I've been trying some stuff, for example I have Office 12 (all hail the new installer!), VC# Express, Photoshop CS 2 and WLM installed and running. I was amazed to see that PS CS 2 actually runs smoother than on my XP install. VC# and Office 12 run nicely too. WLM however seems to have some trouble. First off, it doesn't want to install on the new Vista build. So I had to copy it over to my new Program Files directory from the XP install. I got it running now, but it simply hogs CPU and memory if I keep my groups expanded.. So I just collapsed them all.

Other than those apps I've also tinkered a bit with the new WMP, and Windows Media Center. I have a TV card, but I can't get it working (yet). Perhaps I do have to install them official buggy drivers, first. I wonder what Media Center can do with my TV card: I've been waiting for something like it, because I simply hate the default software I got with it. I certainly hope it won't be a CPU hog, which most TV apps appear to be. WMP seems a bit sloppy still, but looking much better already and it appears to start faster, as well.

Anyways, just my $0.02.

How Microsoft stole Christmas

Ho ho ho.

I guess we should've coming: Last weekend one of our accounts, buddha, was kicked offline. While sticking to the limits of a contact list, it is still not able to synchronize its contact list. This reminds of last year, when bot2k3@hotmail.com was thrown from the network.

This setback has made our nr. of users drop from 18,000+ back to ~17,600 users. Bummer, eh? Anyways, we are looking into the issue more toroughly now, and hope to come up with a solution soon. Most likely we will send all users on that specific mirror an email telling them to add a different mirror.

I hope you had a better Christmas :-)

Still no official WLM invite from MSN

Well well. It looks like MSN is having "some" problems with their WLM invites -- OK, I received one from Huuf (for which I'm very thankful), but after more than a week there is still no official invite. I was (or am?) a MSN Messenger 7.5 tester, so that should automatically mean I'm also a WLM tester. But alas, nothing.

I know I'm not the only one, too. When checking the newsgroups of 7.5 I see a whole lot of "still nothing", "nothing here", "still no word from MSN" messages floating around. I am kind of loosing my patience with MSN now, and again I'm not the only one. Most of the people who posted on the newsgroups got their invites from their pals in the meantime, but it would be nice if everyone got a normal invite as well (perhaps to "repay" their pals who "lost" an invite).

Granted, it's a free product, and the BETA is free as well. But if one was promised to be included, and they agreed to an NDA for it then I think at least an appology of some sort is due. How hard can it be to send out an e-mail to everyone who has not yet received their invites with a simple message something along the lines of "Sorry, we are having xyz problems and we are trying to resolve them ASAP. Please be patient, blabla". At least that would show they still CARE about their users/costumers.

C#, BOT2K3, and some other stuff (I think)

Sooo...

I've downloaded a copy of Visual Studio C# Express Edition. And.. well.. I can't say anything other than.. It bloody rocks my box0rz! I've never done much with C# before.. But I absolutely love the mix of C, Java etc. Basically, I think it's Java with the missing stuff: operator overloading, better class support, easier namespace management, and a WAY better IDE than any of the Java ones combined. Awesome. It's really easy to learn, too. So, why haven't you downloaded a copy yet? (there are C++ and VB.NET editions too!)

In other news, BOT2K3 has beaten its personal record this week! We now have over 18,000 (at time of writing 18,225) users (the old record was set somewhere between 17,500 and 18,000). It also appears to be a bit stabler nowadays, but not as nearly as we wished/thought/hoped it would be. The problem is still that at some point it will just lock up with a memory fault.. And we have no idea what's causing it :-(

Anyway, Christmas is nearing which automatically means.. No school for 2 weeks (starting this friday)! Woo! Not that we're actually doing much nowadays (or at least, this week). So far we've been playing Mario Kart (N64), Unreal Tournament, checking out some tricks on Windows 2000 to get us some more privileges and well.. Having lots of fun, hehe. The classroom (or rather, PC room :P) we're using is now fully decorated with lights, a mini-christmas tree etc etc. I think we got the best classroom of this year.. It's really cool :-)

So, what are you doing with Christmas?

Meeting in Amsterdam

Well, well..

As you might've read on Mess.be there was a meeting yesterday (wednesday the 7th) with some of the "MSN Messenger guys". After a two and a half hour travel from the north of the country to Amsterdam I met up with ZoRoNaX and later the rest of the people who were coming (TB, Speedy Kevin, Jusef, etc). We got a quick bite in the burger king and headed for In De Wildeman, a café specialized in beer. I'm not very fond of beer, but I must admit that the ones I had were absolutely marvelous.

After about an half hour there the "MSN Messenger guys" showed up -- Consisting of Scott Swanson, Todd Biggs & Joost Bon (MSN Netherlands). After everyone had introduced themselves and everyone got a drink we started talking about.. Well, what didn't we talk about? The new BETA, the latest gadgets, our ideas for MSN Messenger, etc etc etc. Later, Hans-Peter and Richard from Oberon and Maarten (yes the one from the BETAs) from MSN Netherlands showed up as well.

I lost track of time, but anyways, after a couple of hours some decided they were hungry and went for a bit in a local restaurant. We all went and sat there eating & talking some more. One by one people left to catch their trains etc. Finally only me, TB, Scott & Todd were left. Unfortunatly the restaurant closed at 12AM, otherwise I guess we would've been sitting there for a while longer ;-)

Seeing as there was no way I was going to get home again at that time I went with TB and stayed at his place for the night (we arrived there at like, 2AM). I missed college today, but it was well-worth it.. I'm even more enthusiastic about everything discussed now! Wow! Oh, and we also got a little present from Scott & Todd: a real MSN Messenger USB stick (128 megs). I heard there are only 400 of them in the whole world.. Hehe, talking about a collectors item! ;-)

Anyway, I'm home again, after a bloody 5 hour travel (delays here, delays there, waiting for busses, etc). Thanks again to everyone who showed up.. It was an awesome evening and I definitely hope we can do it again some time!
