Checked in all thatWell well.
After a 10 hour flight, and like 4 hours in total for checking in and picking up backage, getting through US customs I have finally arived at the hotel. The hotel is really cool, and the staff is very friendly. I can really recommend it to anyone who needs to be in this area for a couple of days (or longer, of course!).
Checked in a while ago (around 2PM), watched some TV, get a stretch after sitting for nearly 10 hours reading a book (hey, what can I say, its a really cool book!). I'll go see what the shortest route to Microsoft is (I have a little map, but alas, I don't know how far it is walking). Shame I dont have a GPS device :P
Anyway, big day tomorrow! Wish me luck (again .. :P) Here I go!Geeze, 6:25AM, and I'm all good to go. Leaving for
Amsterdam Airport (ie. "Shiphol") soon. I will be back monday with a lot of
stories (hopefully ;-)). Wish me luck! Do you have any tips...... For what I can do for 10h on a
plane? 7.5 on steroidsSo.. I took a look at the new Windows Live
Messenger 8 build. First impression: 7.5 on
steroids.
First lets look at the contact
list. I liked how they finally removed the square-y-ness of 7.5 from the old
WLM build, but I guess they decided it was no good and re-added it. The contact
list itself is now all square again, which I think is a big no-no. They also
moved everything to the right hand side -- something I think its
counter-intuitive; everyone is used to looking at the left for their own DP,
nickname etc.. Why suddenly move it to the right? It just.. doesn't work right.
On a positive note, I like how they changed the WLM logo. That was a welcomed
change.
Next: the conversation
window. Ugh. Ugh, and more ugh. I like the new, smaller, icon bar at the
top. However, I think there is, again, too much square stuff. Literally
everything it square (OK, except the icons, but they dont count, do they?). They
also moved back the send/search buttons into the text area -- Something I don't
like. Why do they have to be IN there? I loved how they were moved out of the
textarea in the very first build of WLM (the second build was OK, too, but I
didnt like the buttons themselves as much).
And the
toast.. Well.. It just looks like some images thrown together with no
thinking behind it. A big square white-ish thing with some text on it and
some blue around it (with, finally, some rounded angles, nice!).
Oh, and the final thing I'm going to say about
it... ARRGHH TOO MUCH BLUE!!
Thanks to Mess.be and hUmAnzZ for the
screenshots XML-RPC for MSN Spaces...... Is pretty cool.
I'm coding a new feature for BOT2K3 right now which allows you to edit your
space from MSN Messenger (without using an activity). You can add Messenger
Plus! mark-up and the like if you wish to use colours, bold or
italic text, etc (expect it to be available to normal users the coming
week). The API doesn't offer a way of uploading files to your storage space yet,
so I guess you won't be able to add images yet. Bummer. I do have a dump for
uploading files to your storage space (it's a simple POST), but seeing as we
don't have any tickets (cookies) nor password(s) of the user we can't
add this in a simple manner.
The uploading to your storage space would be cool
for a WebMessenger though. As you know I've been busy with a WebMessenger in the
past (ie. couple of months ago), but because I had little to no time to spend on
it I decided to leave it for now. I've got some new cool ideas for it though,
that could really enhanche it (storing your DPs in your MSN storage space,
anyone? ;-). I've also found this cool plugin for FireFox called FireBug
-- It allows you to capture any object, or any code or any data transferred with
XMLHttpRequest which makes debugging a LOT easier (be gone you nasty alert()s!). Maybe I should put some work into my
WebMessenger after all... ;-)
I'd while I'm at it, I want to thank everyone who
has congratulated and/or wished me luck for my upcoming interviews at Microsoft.
I'll drop you an e-mail, Dare, about
swinging by your office later ;-) I got to run now anyway, or else I will be too
late for my appointment at the bank to pick up my creditcard :P
Edit: Dare, take a look at my
custom HTML element at the top of the page. As you can see it also displays the
title and "true" (I guess this is for the "show border" option). I guess
you're using a different way of storing the information in the database now, but
haven't changed the code yet to reflect this change. I've tried re-saving
without the text, but no luck -- It just re-adds it straight
away. Quick bloggyI noticed I hadn't blogged in a while so I figured I'd type up some nonsense again to keep my readers entertained ;-) I've been pretty busy the past few days/weeks with school (that's a first..) and BOT2K3 (lots and lots of fixes/changes and some cool new stuff coming up).
Also I should probably tell you about something I think is really cool -- in early december last year I had a preliminary interview with Microsoft for an intern position. Haven't heard from them for a like a month, so I decided to mail them back. Slip up in contacting me, apparently. Anyway, to make a long story short: I have been invited for a second round of interviews in Redmond. Wow, totally uber cool, huh? Am flying in on the day before the interviews and leaving 2 days after (so I have one full day to look around the city/campus/whatever!). I'm really really excited about the opportunity.. Wish me luck! ;-)
Had a comeback-evening tonight of the highschool I went to. It was pretty cool seeing everybody again (with everyone doing different majors across the country you quickly lose touch, a shame really). Started at 7:30, and finished three hours later (they closed down the building so we had to leave ;-). Me and two old pals stuck around for a while and stood outside talking for like, more than one hour (brr, its cold outside! :-( )
Anyway, time to go to bed now, so I'll catch you later! :-) |
